We’ve all heard of couples taking off like a thief in the night and getting married in an elopement ceremony. Whatever their reason, whether they can’t afford a big wedding ceremony (or just don’t want to be subjected to wedding planning) or they simply want to be married to each other sooner than having a traditional wedding would allow, eloping can be a scary thing to do. So, what is eloping really and should you be scared or embrace it?
What is eloping & what does it mean for the couple?
The word elopement is an old-fashioned term for a marriage that takes place without the knowledge or presence of the couple’s family and friends, particularly their parents. Typically when people get married they have something called a reception where all your guests come to celebrate with you but if two crazy kids decide not to tell anyone then there will be no big party afterward because nobody knows what happened!
Traditional weddings are all about tradition, pomp & circumstance – and they’re expensive. Elopements, however, offer a ceremony that is as unique as your relationship with each other. Eloping is cool because it cuts out all the boring stuff that doesn’t matter. Other people at my wedding were just in the way of me getting to marry my girl! Elopements are a great opportunity for couples who really want something special and unique—the best part about elopement weddings is they can take place anywhere, even Texas Hill Country (even if you’re not into riding horses or running cattle).
Elopements replace traditional, expensive weddings.
Let’s cut to the chase – elopements are way cheaper than wedding ceremonies. Your typical wedding will cost at least $20,000 & the average wedding cost varies by state but an elopement can be under $100. Most of us would prefer to do something with our elopement aside from going to the courthouse, though, so the cost of each elopement will differ based on what the couple decides to do with their ceremony & any potential honeymoon trip, etc.
What we’re finding these days is that couples are opting to have small, intimate ceremonies with their closest friends & family. While these may not technically be an elopement in the sense of sneaking away from everyone to tie the knot, they are called elopement ceremonies & we have the perfect elopement location with our chapel!
Should we elope?
Whether or not elopement is the right thing to do is different for every couple. If you want to tie the knot surrounded by your loved ones while you and your s/o are dressed to the nines in a beautiful wedding dress and a dashing suit, go for it! What your wedding looks like is entirely up to you.
If you and your partner are considering elopement because of financial reasons, but you want to have your wedding day, you might not have to sacrifice it! Many couples who are in a financial bind will have a micro wedding or a small wedding, which will cut costs a great deal from a large wedding. If you’re just itching to go somewhere to take your vows, consider an adventure wedding! Having an adventure wedding means whatever you want it to. If you want to have a destination wedding, where you and your guests can go on an adventure, do that! It may mean compromising the size of your wedding party, but if the adventure is more important to you, make it a part of your wedding.
If you and your partner find yourself dreading the idea of preparing for big day, you should probably talk about elopement. A wedding ceremony often comes with a lot of stress. From dealing with overbearing family to making sure all of your friends are enjoying themselves, your wedding can go from being about you to being about everyone else in a moment if you’re not careful. On top of this, there are tons of moving parts in a wedding that many couples are managing themselves. In between vows and first dances, they may find themselves telling caterers where to go or running around trying to find a flower girl who took a game of hide and seek too seriously way to close to the ceremony. With an elopement, all of the focus is on the couple.

Wanted a destination wedding but couldn’t afford it? Have a destination elopement where you and your partner get married on a vacation or in another location. Mountain elopements and desert elopements are also something that you can consider to get the views that you’re looking for! There is no shortage of ceremony ideas or elopement ideas that you can tap to make your wedding experience right for you. There are thousands of ceremony locations that you can utilize and you can tailor the ceremony to be exactly what you want it to be without having to worry about your friends and family and whether or not they’re comfortable. With an elopement, every little detail is about you.
How do we elope?
There’s no cookie-cutter answer to how elopements should be done. Each couple has different wedding traditions that they want to observe, different ways that they express love for one another, and may want a different location to take their vows.
The first thing to do is consider what you and your partner want in the ceremony. Do you want to have it close to home or go on a road trip to be far away from family and friends? Do you have any fur babies that you want to include in the ceremony? Are you hiring photographers or do you want the ceremony to only be in your memories? Do you want to get married somewhere that looks like a more traditional wedding venue or do you want to elope to a special location, like an outdoor spot? There is no shortage of ideas for what to do while you elope, the hard part for couples is paring it down to ideas that both of them like.
Once you’ve chosen what all you’re going to do for your elopement, all you need to do is carry it out! Unlike with wedding planning for most weddings, when you’re planning an elopement, you don’t have to check in with your loved ones to see which meal they want to choose, to coordinate plus ones, to prepare and send invitations, and all of the other tiring things that the wedding industry capitalizes on every year. Elopement ceremonies are only about the couples who are eloping!
